When Your Life is in Turmoil,
Get Paid for It

by Kathryn Lay

For the first time in twenty years, I’ve gone through a writing desert. I’m not blocked for ideas, I still have more ideas than time to write them. I haven’t forgotten how to write. I’m distracted.

Health issues. A sick parent. Financial upheavals. A new business. As each one piles on, I’ve done less and less of the thing I love. Writing. I’ve taken short writing breaks, during Christmas time or during family vacation, but never like this.

As I’m working on getting back into my children’s novel that is so close to being done and work on small articles and proposals and short stories I had planned, I’m finding it a bit of a struggle to slip back into where I was before; a fast, productive, selling writer.

For those who know me, this is a painful and honest confession. But in talking to many creative friends who write, paint, are potters, artists, actors, etc.; I’ve found that such powerfully distracting events can pull and pull until you push yourself back into your own passion.

What can you do when life’s ups and downs, distractions and activities pull you away from your writing?

Write about it.

Readers can relate to the stresses, strains, and seriousness of life issues. If you can give an answer or show how you overcame it or write an essay the reader relates to and finds comfort in; then you can both write again and write with a purpose.

MAKE A LIST.

What is going on in your life, generally and specifically, that is taking you away from your creativity?

IMAGINE A SOLUTION.

Whether you’ve come out the other side or are still on the road, write about your solution or discover ways to solve it and write about it.

MAKE ANOTHER LIST.

Find publications that are about your specific issue and then find others that could use articles or essays on these situations. Religious publications where you can show how your faith helped you. Women’s publications where you can write how-to’s or informational pieces. Health publications. General magazines looking for essays.

KEEP A JOURNAL.

Most writers are familiar with journal keeping. Make sure to keep one during these times when life has overrun your normal creativity. When you are ready to write about it, the situation and emotion and details are there for you. This will also keep you writing. The longer your drift from your creativity, the harder it is to get back into the flow.

WRITE, REWRITE, SUBMIT.

As with your writing before, don’t stop with the ‘research’. Write about what is happening, what you’ve learned, how you survived, how others can survive. Rewrite it to dig through the raw emotion to find the relatable material that will make your piece desired by editors. Study your list of possible markets and begin to submit. Then, move on to the next piece.

After going through our daughter’s adoption process, I wrote, sold, and resold over a dozen pieces about various real and emotional aspects of the event. During and after cancer when it was difficult to write the things I was used to writing, I wrote about this event in my life, finding ways to encourage others along the way and bringing in bylines and checks.

Now, it’s time to write about caring for an ill and difficult father, beginning an antique business, refocusing writing when past areas have gone dry, finding new ways to survive the economy, etc. I’m already thinking of homes for such articles.

As it’s been said that when life gives you lemons make lemonade; as a writer we turn those lemons into words, publication, and income. And then, that lemonade tastes really good.
