Writing WHO You Know
by Kathryn Lay
Nearly everyone I know has or will become a subject or helper in one of my articles.
I’ve written about friends with special collections for collector magazines, friends who have volunteered, friends who have created or built, friends who have an interesting job or hobby.
I have friends who I want to write about and am looking for that perfect place to query or submit.
How many people do you know – family, friends, acquaintances, and friends of friends who you might be able to interview or include as an expert about a specific topic? Most people love to talk about their passion, experiences, knowledge, and work. Provide them an opportunity to have their name or organization or small business or passion put into print and rarely will you have to do much prodding.
My first experience in writing about others was with our local newspaper. They had a section of profiles of people in our city. Within six months, I had written about a dozen people and had a nice bank account and list of clips. I found an artist at our local flea market who fled Vietnam and now made his living painting portraits. I wrote about a friend who spent her free time helping refugee children. I found a local dentist who went to Haiti once a year to provide free dental care. Until the newspaper cancelled this section of the paper, I enjoyed getting paid for meeting interesting people and writing about them.
After that, I found a magazine that focused on people’s collections. I knew my friend who had over 200 nativity sets from around the world would be a perfect subject. I was even able to sell the photos I took.
When I found a magazine for carousel enthusiasts, I contacted our local amusement park. They had just refurbished an antique carousel set. I spent hours visiting with and interviewing the man responsible for bringing the carousel back to life. My article with full color photos was printed, I received a nice check, a byline, and tickets to the park for my family.
Look around you. Who do you know or even barely know who would make a wonderful subject for an article or part of an article?
Keep a small notebook with a page for someone’s name, contact information, and the things that makes them a future article subject.
Think of people and their jobs, their hobbies, their obsessions that they live, their amazing experiences, their travels to exotic places, their volunteer work, their arts and crafts, and so on.
Check Writer’s Market for magazines that take profiles. Check your local newspaper. A friend recently was asked to do a profile a day of local church and business leaders for her local paper. A nice part-time check and guaranteed byline.
Watch the paper for pieces about local people who would be perfect to write about for a magazine. Travel essays, children’s magazines, collector publications, and more.
Ask friends if they have friends who also are knowledgeable or a part of something interesting and exciting. A friend introduced me to a friend of theirs who has been involved in spelunking for years.
Look up old friends and see what’s going on with them now. I recently ran into an old friend who created a product that has become very popular. She has turned her craft into a thriving business that employs others and is sold at festivals, fairs, markets, and events all over our state. I’m excitedly watching for a place where her story would fit in perfectly.
And while you’re making a list. Don’t forget yourself. Do you have a specific passion? Are you involved with a group of people with the same passion? You have a personal experience piece with quotes from others in the making.
As a writer, we are told to write what we know. But sometimes, it’s profitable and rewarding to write WHO we know.
