Writer’s BLOGs for Freelancers

by Dan Case

I follow and read a number of NY Times best-selling author’s BLOGs on my iphone. Mostly authors that I have met personally. I’m always interested in what these authors are up to. Tess Gerritsen (http://www.tessgerritsen.com/blog) and Dana Stabenow (http://www.stabenow.com) are two of my favorites. But the BLOGs I get the most useful information from are the freelancers who BLOG about their writing business and who try to help other writers with their own writing businesses. Here are some of my favorites:

1. Dollars and Deadlines — (http://dollarsanddeadlines.blogspot.com) Kelly James-Enger is the author of $ix-Figure Freelancing: The Writer’s Guide to Making More Money (Random House, 2005) and Ready, Aim, Specialize!: Create Your Own Writing Specialty and Make More Money!, second edition (Marion Street Press, 2008). Kelly BLOGs two or three times a week with tips on freelancing. From query letters to ghost writing. She’s an excellent teacher and a good example of a very successful freelance writer.

2. Christina Katz ~ Empowering Writers(http://christinakatz.com) Christina Katz is the author of Get Known Before The Book Deal: Use Your Personal Strengths To Grow An Author Platform (Writer’s Digest Books, 2008) and Writer Mama: How to Raise a Writing Career Alongside Your Kids (Writer’s Digest Books, 2007). There’s always lots of good info coming out of Christina’s blog. She’s a good writer, promoter (of her books and writing), and teacher.

3. Writing and Publishing News — (http://www.matilijapress.com/publishingblog) Patricia Fry is a prolific self-publisher. She is the executive director of SPAWN (Small Publishers, Artists and Writers Network) and BLOGS every 1-3 days about publishing, promoting and the writing business in general. Patricia’s BLOGs are a bit unusual in that they are nearly always chapter length. You get a LOT of information each time she publishes a BLOG.

4. Kathryn Lay writer — (http://kathrynlaywriter.blogspot.com) Kathryn is a working writer. She has had published a bunch of children’s books and over 1800 articles, essays and short stories in magazines, anthologies and the Internet. Kathryn got her start writing on the Internet when I met her at a writer’s conference and begged her to write an article for Writing for DOLLARS! back in 2000. We published her book The Organized Writer is a Selling Writer and Kathryn is the most-read author on our website. She has a great “Friday Writer’s Tip” on her BLOG.

5. Inkygirl.com: Daily Diversions for Writers — (http://www.inkygirl.com) Debbie Ridpath Ohi is responsible for having the very first popular website and newsletter for writers on the Internet, Inkspot.com and Inklings (She sold them during the dot-com boom and both went under without her.) She helped me get Writing for DOLLARS! started in 1997 by announcing our launch in her newsletter. We quickly went from 100 to 2000 subscribers in just a couple of days. Debbie blogs daily with tons of useful information for writers and freelancers.

If you haven’t been “following” any BLOGS before, these are some good ones to get started reading. Grab yourself a BLOG reader like Google Reader and go for it. I use Google reader from my iphone. I now have something to do while waiting in line at Walmart.

I’m sure there are many more good BLOGs out there that can help us all make more money writing. Drop me a line and tell me about them.
